Summer Solstice

Blog

Not sure where the first half of the year went, but it’s gone by in a whirl. We have gotten pastures seeded, and our indispensable ranch hand, Quinlan, rotates the cattle onto new grass every couple of days, and keeps fence lines trimmed. Don’t know what we’d do without him.

Our herd is up to 48. We’re utilizing all three of our bulls—Pete, Charlie, and Hank, and we’re getting nice genetic diversity in our herd.

Our friends at RecklessLove Farm invited us to participate in the Farmer’s Market at Mosaic in Pittsboro on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5pm. We invite you to come by, fill out an order, and we’ll bring the beef the following Sunday. DL & Mia of RecklessLove Farm raise sheep, and Mia is a fabulous artist. Come see her beautiful work and stay to chat for a while.

We were able to attend the Pineywoods Cattle Registry & Breeder’s Ass’n. annual meeting held in April in Bogalusa, LA. It was a long trip, but we got to see old friends, make new ones, and eat delicious, ‘down home’ fare. Since we were ‘close’, we traveled to east Texas to visit our nephew & his wife on their ranch. They’re raising chickens, goats, and cattle (not Pineywoods, unfortunately, but I’m working on them). It was great to see family.

On July 10, we’ll take a steer to the processor, which means by early August, we’ll have more steaks, roasts, brisket, and of course ground beef in our freezers. We currently still have several cuts available, so come to the ranch and “shop the freezer” or place an order through the website and pick it up at the ranch on Saturdays. And be sure to visit us at the Mosaic Farmer’s Market. Remember, if you have friends or family who are interested in starting their own herd of these lovely animals, point them in our direction—we have several young heifers and bulls for sale. Happy Summer!
